Fresh Gourmet® Introduces "tiny bites" Cheesy Croutons for Kids

[Los Angeles, California; August, 2007]: Fresh Gourmet Company, manufacturers of the #1 brand of croutons, today announced the introduction of “tiny bites” Cheesy Croutons, the first crouton targeted especially at kids. This exciting concept offers retailers an opportunity to champion fresh produce to families with children, while encouraging kids to eat salads.

The launch is timed for early October, and the promotion will feature a high-impact “tiny bites” shipper, an on-pack $3.00 rebate on Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book Platinum Edition DVD, and a 55˘ coupon off of Nature Sweet Tomatoes. Included on the display will be a tear sheet recipe for the “tiny bites Jungle Salad.” The family-friendly recipe encourages salad consumption as a gateway to healthy eating.

The smaller size of these croutons, combined with a popular flavor profile, provides a great way to lead kids and their families to the concept of preparing and eating fresh produce. It’s a significant opportunity for our produce partners to evolve a new market that speaks to a trend towards healthier eating.”

The campaign aligns with the new USDA guidelines which limit fats, calories and sugar. With childhood obesity at an all-time high, Fresh Gourmet saw the need to use their position to contribute to the solution. Specifically, the new guidelines call for limits such as the following:

 • A cap on calories that results in appropriate kid-sized portions.

 • Total fat will not exceed 30 percent of calories for main and side dishes and 35 percent for snacks.

 • Saturated fat will not exceed 10 percent of calories for main dishes, side dishes and snacks.

 • Added sugar will not exceed 10 percent of calories for main dishes and side dishes and 25 percent of calories for snacks.
